When I first stumbled across the hygge lifestyle (a Danish concept that embodies coziness, comfort, and simple joy), I thought it was mostly about candles and chunky knit blankets. And while those things definitely bring comfort, hygge is so much more than an aesthetic. It’s a mindset—an intentional way of living that prioritizes peace, rest, and joy in small everyday moments.
As someone navigating an autoimmune disorder, I’ve learned that healing isn’t only about medical treatments or appointments. It’s about self-care rituals that help me slow down, honor my body, and create an environment that feels safe and soothing. Hygge has become part of my healing toolkit, a way to embrace the soft life while reminding myself that rest is not laziness—it’s medicine.
That’s why I created my Hygge Self-Care Video Series: to share cozy rituals and gentle practices that nurture both body and soul.
Self-care doesn’t always have to look like a spa day or a big routine. The hygge lifestyle has taught me that self-care is often found in the simplest rituals: a warm cup of tea, soft lighting, or curling up with a journal.
These quiet moments help me regulate my nervous system, reduce stress, and ground myself when life feels overwhelming. And if you’re living with a chronic illness, autoimmune disorder, or just daily burnout, you know how much stress can affect both mind and body. Creating hygge-inspired self-care rituals has been one of the gentlest ways I support my healing.
Living with CIDP (a rare autoimmune disorder) has changed how I see rest. For years, I pushed through pain and fatigue, treating comfort as a luxury. Now I know comfort is part of the healing process. Cozy living—warm blankets, calming music, or a quiet night with candles—signals to my body that it’s safe to let go.
Some of my favorite hygge-inspired healing rituals:
These self-care practices aren’t just cozy; they’re restorative. They remind me that slowing down is an act of strength.
The soft life movement is all about ease, peace, and intentional living. Pairing it with the hygge lifestyle creates a powerful combination for healing. Both encourage us to stop chasing hustle culture and instead choose gentleness, rest, and presence.
For me, embracing soft life and hygge has been a radical act of self-love. It’s allowed me to see rest not as giving up, but as a way of giving my body exactly what it needs.
If you’re ready to add more comfort and calm into your life, here are a few simple hygge-inspired self-care rituals you can start today:
These rituals may seem small, but they add up to create an environment of healing and softness.
Healing isn’t linear—some days are challenging, and others feel lighter. But weaving hygge into my self-care routines has shown me that I can still create moments of joy and comfort, even on the hardest days. Cozy living, soft life practices, and intentional rest have become part of my healing journey.
